Any piece of Santa Barbara real estate can be impacted by mold. A new study revealed that building quality could be one of the main determinants of mold growth, not weather and humidity.

Tight energy regulations regulate the construction of today's buildings. When moisture becomes stuck inside the walls of a structure, the greenhouse effect is created. It helps to get routine roof, drainage, and structure inspections to maintain mold infestations.

It's much more costly to repair a massive mold problem than it is to get annual inspections. A mold problem might collapse the deal when the time comes to sell your Santa Barbara home .

Many high rises across the country are literally going green. Green roofs are being installed in Chicago, and perhaps one day in Santa Barbara. These aren't roofs built from environmentally friendly materials or solar panels. Here, you can plant everything from daisies to squash.

Potted plants have adorned rooftops for years but this new kind of roofing, complete with a unique drainage system, allows plants to physically root. There are plenty of benefits to green roofing. Above all, cooling needs are reduced by well over 25 percent, diminishing the greenhouse effect. The heat from concrete and blacktop is absorbed tremendously by plants.

A flat, black roof is not as aesthetically pleasing than a rooftop oasis. Whether you plant grass, flowers, or brush, you now have a place to stop and smell the roses. As of now, green roofing will only be found in the big city, however, keep a lookout for Santa Barbara homes going green.

Summer is now in full bloom. With heat waves spreading across much of the United States, power to run the AC has become limited. If your Santa Barbara home is without AC, there are many things you can do to cool down.

To start off, place something frozen in your hand for as long as possible. This can lower you body temperature by as much as 3 degrees Fahrenheit and will last for up to an hour. If it starts to hurt, stop. Drink lots of water, even if you are not thirsty. All of the fluids depleted from perspiration must be made up somewhere. If you have to go outdoors, cover up with airy, loose-fitting clothes, but if you can, keep out of direct sunlight.

Turn off all heat sources such as lights or the TV. Get your hair wet by taking a cool shower or bath. Place a wet towel behind your neck, on your forehead, on the inside of your wrists and elbows, and on the backs of your knees. The rest of your body will naturally cool down by cooling these points.

Go to the library, a bookstore, or other air-conditioned spot if all else fails. Humans have lived for many years without AC. Roughing it for a couple days will not be that hard.
