You can add value to your Santa Barbara home by improving your master bedroom or deck. However, certain renovations could essentially end up costing you when the time comes to sell.

In hot, dry regions, adding a swimming pool is required. In cooler regions, a lot of buyers are turned off by the amount of upkeep. A home with a pool will not appeal to some families with young children. The new room you added on is great for a game room, but you probably didn't consider how it looks from the exterior. A home will not sell when an addition is poorly constructed and does not match the rest of the house.

When following design trends, be careful. Certain aspects will date a home, just like wood paneling. Be smart and think ahead when personalizing your Santa Barbara home.
