Summer is in full bloom. Energy to run the AC has become limited as heat waves pass through much of the U.S. There are a few things you can do to cool down if your Santa Barbara home is without an AC.
Hold something frozen in your hand for as long as you can . This will cool down your body for more than an hour and will decrease your temperature by as much as 3 degrees Fahrenheit. Stop if it begins to hurt. Drink plenty of H2O, even if you are not thirsty. All of the fluids lost from sweating must be made up somewhere. If you have to go outside, cover up with airy, loose-fitting clothing, but if possible, avoid direct sunlight.
Turn off all the lights and all other heat sources, like the computer. Get your hair wet by taking a cool shower or bath. Place a damp towel behind your neck, on your forehead, on the inside of your wrists and elbows, and on the backs of your knees. These points will naturally cool the rest of your body down.
If all else fails, go to the movies, a bookstore, or other air-conditioned place. People have lived for thousands of years without AC. Roughing it for a few days will not be that hard.
