Summer is currently in full bloom. With heat spells spreading across most of the country, energy to run the AC has become limited. There are a few things you can do to cool down if your Santa Barbara home is without an AC.
Place something frozen in your hand for as long as possible . This can cool your body by as much as 3 degrees F and will last for almost an hour. Stop if it begins to hurt. Drink a lot of H2O, even if you aren't thirsty. All of the fluids lost from perspiration have got to be made up somewhere. Wear airy, loose-fitting clothes if you have to go outside, however it's wise to avoid direct sunlight.
Turn off all the lights and all other heat sources, like the computer. Get your hair wet by taking a cool shower or bath. Place a damp towel behind your neck, on your forehead, on the inside of your wrists and elbows, and on the backs of your knees. The rest of your body will naturally cool down by cooling these points.
If everything else fails, go to the movies, mall, or other air-conditioned place. People have lived for many years without AC. Roughing it for a couple of days will not be that hard.
