Several Santa Barbara home owners are living off the earth. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service, farm living has increased at the rate of 2 percent a year. A lot of owners aren't planning to farm for a profit.

Because farming involves so much work, it is not for everybody. Isolation is another reason why people stay away from moving to a farm. Nevertheless, if you enjoy open space and are looking for a challenge, life on a farm just might be for you.

Numerous communities are turning to the past for downtown design. Cities of the past were designed with a roads system, public and private buildings, a theater, and an amphitheater, in a rectangular block.

Developers, and individuals involved in Santa Barbara real estate , should keep in mind that many elements of design are enduring and shouldn't be forgotten. The leading concern for new developments is environmental issues. Instead of demolishing trees, drainage corridors, and mountain slopes, developers seek to build around them in order to protect natural characteristics, similar to earlier developments.

Details also involve easy "walkability," which means eighty-percent of development must be within five minutes of 80 percent of all activities. Perhaps the biggest link to ancient societies is the fact that improvement relies less on the home and more on the community.

Summer is in full bloom. Energy to run the AC has become scarce as heat waves spread through most of the U.S. There are numerous things you can do to cool off if your Santa Barbara home is without an AC.

Place something frozen in your hand for as long as possible . This will cool down your body for more than an hour and will lower your temperature by as much as 3 degrees F. Stop if it begins to hurt. Drink a lot of H2O, even if you aren't thirsty. All of the fluids depleted from perspiration have to be made up somewhere. Keep out of direct sunlight. If you do go outside, cover up with airy, loose-fitting clothes.

Turn off all heat sources such as lights or the TV. Get your hair wet by taking a cool shower or bath. Place a damp towel behind your neck, on your forehead, on the inside of your wrists and elbows, and on the backs of your knees. The rest of your body will naturally cool down by cooling these points.

Go to the library, a bookstore, or other air-conditioned spot if everything else fails. Humans have lived for many years without AC. Roughing it for a couple days will not be that difficult.

Times they are-a-changing, especially in regards to the design of Santa Barbara homes . Ever since 1970, the biggest change is the amount of square footage. Up from 1,600 square feet in 1973, the average new home has expanded to 2,400 square feet. Today, homes have at the very least two bathrooms when they used to have less than two.

Kitchens have had an expansion also, now at a whopping 285 square feet, up from a mere 9x10. Many kitchens have seen the addition of islands, breakfast bars, and nooks. An old-fashioned living room is a thing of the past. Today families congregate around the flat screen TV instead. Many garages hold more than two cars and an all-inclusive laundry room is a necessity. As four bedrooms are becomming most common, children are less likely to share a room. Keep posted, Santa Barbara real estate is going to adapt to the times.

There are a lot of things you can do to reduce the electricity bill of your Santa Barbara home . To start off, you can switch to compact fluorescent bulbs in lamps that are turned on for longer than two hours per day. Fluorescent bulbs are 6-8 times more energy efficient than ordinary bulbs and will endure 10-20 times longer.

When they are not being used, unplug devices like iPod chargers or paper shreders. Even when they are not turned on, they will continue to use up some juice. When cooking small items that don't need to be pre-heated, use an energy efficient microwave or toaster oven.

Switch your computer off or to "standby" mode when you are done. You might reduce the price of running a computer by 85 per cent by using a laptop instead of a desktop. Turn your refrigerator to 38-40 degrees Fahrenheit and don't open the door very often or for very long.

Finally, only use the dryer for full loads, if you can, line dry, and use cold water for washing. By beginning with these small steps, you will be able to reduce your CO2 emissions and save money on your monthly bills.

Applications for Santa Barbara home mortgages rose 2 percent in mid-September, according to Reuters. Applications are at their highest level since last April. This rise was a result of two main factors.

A drop in interest rates by the Federal Reserve is the primarily reason. With a lower interest rate, even more homeowners are urged to refinance. An excess of homes on the market is the second component. Prices are driven down with a surplus of homes.

There has never been a better time to buy a piece of real estate, although the Santa Barbara real estate market is beginning to slow. As soon as you found a home in a hot market, you had to jump on it.

You can take your time to find the ideal home now, since there is more of a selection in housing. Room for bargaining is possible in the present market. Buyers have even more say at the table, even though the overall process could take a little bit longer. Currently, interest rates remain comparatively low. You are still going to get a great deal, all things considered, though rates might not be at 5.84%, like they were in 2004.

If nothing else, real estate is a great investment. Whether you are buying to turn over, or buying to keep, owning a piece of real estate will yield great tax advantages.
